The merciless war waged for three years by the Five Eyes (5Eyes or FVEY), an alliance between the intelligence services of the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand (+ unofficially Israel and Japan) against the Chinese giant Huawei hid many other issues more complex than financial and economic. The real stakes of this conflict are of paramount geostrategic importance.
The 5G infrastructure developed by Huawei not only jeopardizes Space X’s entire Starlink network but is likely to disable it.
5G coverage based on Huawei infrastructure from western Russia adjacent to Ukraine could have significantly hampered the Starlink network in central and eastern Ukraine.
SpaceX acknowledged this week that “harmful” interference from certain 5G networks could render its Starlink network inoperative. This recognition did not knowingly include the military component of Starlink and was content with its civilian applications.
For SpaceX, mobile phone services using the 12GHz range pose a serious problem for Starlink users since the constellation of low-orbit microsatellites that make up this system also use the same frequency. A study by SpaceX on the impact of 5G networks on its Starlink system demonstrated that even with a drastic reduction in 5G interference, service providers, for example online TV providers using Starlink, would experience signal interruptions in 74% cases.
During the first phase of the renewed conflict in Ukraine at the end of February 2022, Russian cyber warfare units were surprised by a new Starlink military application offered by the United States to this country as part of military assistance. The development of countermeasures was made possible by the experience of Huawei engineers in this area. 5G networks based on Huawei infrastructure were found to disable the coverage area of Starlink network military applications. This involved breaking the signal between an attack drone and its command post or with another flying or ground station.
